Thirteen Chords, One Number System

The Chord Formulas Poster from MusicDiagrams.com lines up thirteen of the most-used chord types on a single chart, so you can see exactly how each one is built. Instead of memorizing hundreds of shapes, you learn the recipe: which scale degrees go into the chord, which notes that gives you in C, and how many semitones sit between each chord tone.

Read the Formula, Build the Chord in Any Key

Every row is one chord type, laid out in five matching columns: chord type, chord symbol, number recipe, notes in C, and interval pattern. The number recipe is the part that travels. A major 7th is always 1-3-5-7, whatever key you're in, so once you know the formula you can build Cmaj7, Fmaj7 or Bbmaj7 without reaching for a new chart.

The interval pattern column measures the same formula in semitones: a major triad is 4-3, a minor triad is 3-4. Put those two rows side by side and you can see exactly why major and minor sound the way they do, and how one shifted note turns a major chord into a dominant 7th.

What's on the Poster

  • 13 chord types: major, minor, diminished, augmented, major 7th, minor 7th, dominant 7th, minor 7b5, diminished 7th, major 6th, minor 6th, suspended 2nd, suspended 4th
  • Five columns per chord: type, symbol, number recipe, notes in C, interval pattern
  • Notes in C spelled out for every chord, flats and double-flats included (C-Eb-Gb-Bbb, C-Eb-Gb-Bb and so on)
  • Interval patterns in semitones so you can count the distance between chord tones instead of guessing
  • Color-coded rows that group related chord qualities and keep each line easy to follow across the chart
  • Large title and bold column headers that stay readable from across a practice room
  • Clean white background with generous margins, so the chart reads as reference material, not decoration

Who It's For

  • Songwriters who want the next chord without flipping through a chord dictionary
  • Piano and guitar players learning to build chords in every key
  • Music theory students connecting scale degrees, intervals, and chord symbols
  • Teachers who need one clear visual for triads, sevenths, and suspensions
  • Producers and arrangers writing parts for instruments they don't play
  • Practice rooms, home studios, and classrooms that want a reference on the wall

Why Formulas Beat Chord Charts

A chord chart gives you one shape in one key. A formula gives you every chord of that type, in every key, on any instrument. Learn 1-b3-5 once and a minor triad is findable from any starting note, which is why this works as a teaching aid as much as a quick reference.
